Curatorial Rationale
My body of work focuses on the theme of fantasy. Each piece communicates a different facet of fantasy, conveying the strengths and faults within fantasy. Each piece conveys a specific sub-theme with the genre of fantasy, such as conflict, characters, idealism, and adventure. I chose fantasy as the topic of my body of works as it is a large part of my life that I have consumed through literature, art, and games. The sub-themes are connected to each other as they are each pillars of the fantasy genre, and are all elements of a story, their needs to be characters, and conflict at the very least for there to be a story.
Early on in my body of work, I used colored pencils as I enjoyed using them and wanted to experiment further with them, and they supported my works. Later I used the digital format through the application Photoshop to create my pieces because the digital format adds a lot of depth to my work through the use of layers. The materials supported my ideas through the vibrant colors that can be made with the materials in addition to the large areas of color that can be made. Much of fantasy is very color-dependent, this can be seen through the archetypal dark lord, who is often wearing black and wielding dark magic, and archetypal hero which is often shown in a bright sense whether through shining armor or magic of their own. With fantasy being this color-dependent I chose materials that had the capability to produce a lot of varieties of color while being flexible and detailed.
The arrangement of my works is based on the order in which I explored the themes of fantasy. From left to right a viewer can develop their own opinions about the fantasy genre through my works, that while different in composition and subject matter, share thematic similarities. In addition, they share similar color schemes and simple shapes. The smaller digital works help provide visual diversity with the larger works in traditional media, creating an engaging display. Fantasy has always been a part of everyday life, escaping into a world of ideals, a world of goods and the bad is relaxing for many people. My exhibition hopes to invite the audience to interact more with fantasy by seeing how I interpreted it through symbolic and literal images.
